Why Pistol Shooting?
Contrary to the popularly held belief portrayed in the media, pistol shooting in NZ isn't a bunch of gung-ho individuals getting their guns off.
Pistol shooting in NZ is a well regulated sport comprised of members from all walks of life and professions,
including: Doctors, Pilots, and Teachers to name but a few.
There are many disciplines ranging from ISSF as shot in the Commonwealth and Olympic games, to CAS (cowboy action shooting).
All run and subject to the highest levels of Safety.
So can I try it to see if I like it?
Of course!!
Come along on any Tuesday night at 7:00pm.
On your first night, one of our instructors will take you through the range safety rules, and how
to safely handle, load, and operate a pistol, then take you on the range for some one-on-one instruction.
Pistol NZ rules allow you to visit us a maximum of 3 times before you need to make your decision.
Each time an instructor will be on hand to supervise you and answer any questions you might have.
Cost is $30 per visit to cover the range fee, pistol hireage and ammunition.
(We highly recommend you bring your own earmuffs/earplugs and safety glasses along)
Ok, I'm hooked, now what?
Once you have made the decision to join, there are a couple of steps to start the ball rolling for you.
First thing you need is a Firearms License (FAL), to join any NZ Pistol Club, you must first either
have your FAL, or be in the process of obtaining your FAL.
Next, you apply to join the Howick Pistol Club, your application is then approved by the committee,
and your 6 month Probation period starts.
During the probation period, you will be taught all the fundamentals of pistol shooting,
pass the safety test and will be qualified as a club range officer.
Finally once your probation period is completed, and you have attended the minimum 12 training sessions,
you can collect a 'B' endorsement application from your local Arms Officer, fill it in and hand it over to the club secretary,
where it is taken to the committee for endorsement and final processing from Pistol NZ and the NZ Police.
Wait, how much is this going to cost me?

| Like sky diving, rock climbing and motor racing, the handling of firearms involves a certain amount of unavoidable risk. Minimizing the risk is the job of the shooter. If you are not the type of person that can accept the responsibility of your own actions, firearms are not for you. |
